What is the difference between a spiritual gift and a calling?

The terms spiritual gifts and callings are closely related and many people use them interchangeably. Both spiritual gifts and callings refer to talents and abilities that are given by God to a person.

However, there are some important distinctions between the two.

A spiritual gift is a special divine enablement given by God to the believer, usually discovered through prayer and contemplation. It is a natural ability given by the Holy Spirit that empowers a Christian to do a certain activity that reinforces God’s will in the believer’s life.

Examples of spiritual gifts include wisdom, teaching, hospitality, prophecy, and healing.

On the other hand, a calling is a specific directive from God to pursue a certain course of action. It is a specific role or mission to fulfill God’s will. A calling is often accompanied by an anointing or a spiritual enablement to do this task that is greater than one’s natural gifts.

It is usually revealed through prayer, Scripture, prophecy, or other forms of divine communication.

In summary, both spiritual gifts and callings come from God and are given to enhance the believer’s life. However, a spiritual gift is a natural ability given to all believers, while a calling is more of a specific directive given to certain individuals.

The ultimate goal of each is always the same – to help fulfill God’s will in the world.

How many spiritual gifts are there according to the Bible?

According to the Bible, there are at least seven spiritual gifts that are given by the Holy Spirit to believers. These gifts are found in various passages throughout the New Testament and are often mentioned together.

The seven spiritual gifts are: wisdom, knowledge, faith, healing, miraculous powers, prophecy, and tongues (understanding of different languages, not necessarily speaking them).

Each of these gifts are given by the Holy Spirit to be used for the common good of the church and to help build up and strengthen believers in their individual faith. For example, the gift of wisdom may be used to help discern God’s will in difficult situations, while the gift of faith can help believers have a strong relationship with God and allow them to stay the course when life gets difficult.

It is important to note that these gifts can differ in terms of their intensity and expression for different believers. We may see some believers excel in one particular spiritual gift, while another believer may be less developed in that same gift but stronger in another area.

Nevertheless, these gifts all glorify God and can be used to bless the body of Christ and bring Him glory.
