Why do dragons only like Targaryens?

Dragons only like Targaryens because they have a special connection with them, enabled by the prophetic words of the Targaryen family’s Valyrian ancestors. This prophecy states that dragons would “return from the fire” with a Targaryen prince or princess.

Over time, dragons have grown to recognize the Targaryens’ unique bloodline, often accepting them as the only ones able to demonstrate an ability to control and bond with these massive creatures.

Unlike any others, Targaryens are said to possess a mysterious capability that allows them to tame dragons and even enter into a telepathic bond with them. This connection is so powerful, it seems as if the two were made for each other.

Dragons, known for their loyalty and intelligence, recognize the Targaryens as their one true master, and will do anything to protect them and further their cause.

It is clear that the Targaryen’s possession of dragons was an incredible asset throughout their rule in Westeros. Without them, the Targaryen’s claim of dominion would have been more difficult to enforce.

Dragons and the Targaryens have a shared destiny, ultimately forever linking their fates together.

Why only Targaryens ride dragons?

Targaryens have a special bond with dragons that dates back centuries. According to legend, Aegon the Conqueror, the first Targaryen ruler of Westeros, and his sister-wives Rhaenys and Visenya had tamed the last three living dragons — Balerion, Meraxes and Vhagar — and used them to help conquer Westeros.

Over the generations, Targaryens continued to bond with and train dragons, so the two were often seen as one in the same. The Targaryen ability to bond with and ride dragons is due in part to their mysterious origin.

Many Westerosi speculate that the Valyrian Freehold — the Targaryen’s ancestral home — practiced a form of sorcery involving blood magic. Some believe that this magical blood connection is what allowed the Targaryens to bond with dragons, and also gave them their renowned pale, silver hair and purple eyes.

As such, only a Targaryen can truly bond with a dragon and ride one.

Why are Targaryens able to control dragons?

It is unclear why Targaryens are able to control dragons, as it appears to have been an ability passed down from generation to generation. Some believe that the Targaryen bloodline makes them uniquely capable of taming dragons, as their bloodline is a direct descendant of the ancient Grey King, who allegedly made a pact with dragons.

Another myth suggests that some ancient Targaryens consumed ritual magic to gain control over dragons, while still another suggests that Rhaenys, a deceased Targaryen princess, was able to control dragons because of her strength of personality and connection to nature.

The greatest evidence of the Targaryen’s control over dragons comes in the form of their personal “dragonlords,” characters raised from childhood to become dragonriders of the Targaryen court. Through a combination of careful selection and rigorous training, these dragonlords formed a unique bond with their dragons that transcended the typical handling of beasts.

Ultimately, the reason why Targaryens are able to control dragons is likely due to their unique history and bond with the mystical creatures.

How did the Targaryens become dragon riders?

The Targaryens are one of the oldest and most powerful families in the world of Westeros and have been dragon riders for centuries. The exact origin of their ability to ride dragons is unknown, however, there are some theories as to how they came to have this power.

The most popular belief is that the Targaryens were descended from the ancient Valyrian Freehold and and their connection to dragons dates back to that time. This freehold was known to practice the art of “dragon-taming”, and is thought to be the source of the Targaryens’ ability.

This theory is further supported by the fact that the Targaryens were the only family to survive the Doom of Valyria, and speculation is that their connection to dragons helped them to evade the catastrophe.

Another theory involves the legend of King Aegon the Conqueror and his two sisters, Visenya and Rhaenys. Aegon is credited with unifying all of Westeros, and according to lore, he accomplished this with the help of his two sisters and their dragons.

It has been theorized that Aegon and his sisters were granted the power of dragon-riding from the gods, granting them immense power and setting them apart from the rest of Westeros.

Whichever explanation is true, the Targaryens became dragon riders and have passed on this power throughout generations. To this day, they continue to have a unique bond with dragons and are one of the last remaining families to possess the power of dragon-riding.

Why is Rhaenyra eaten by dragons?

Rhaenyra is eaten by dragons due to a series of events and decisions that dramatically escalate throughout her story arc.

It all begins with Rhaenyra’s support for her son and the complete refusal of Prince Aegon to let Rhaenyra serve as queen. Aegon accuses Rhaenyra of treason and has her thrown in prison. In an attempt to save her life, Rhaenyra barters a deal with Aegon: she will swear the Iron Price, sacrificing her own will in exchange for freedom.

Aegon accepts and Rhaenyra is released from prison. However, her life is far from secure as her release was conditional on her swearing off her claim to the throne and no longer interfering in the lives of her children.

This arrangement does not last, however, as Rhaenyra continues to make attempts at reclaiming her throne, which is seen as treason by Prince Aegon’s supporters. Eventually, Rhaenyra’s actions cause her to be declared an outlaw by the High Council, with orders that she be taken alive or killed.

Knowing that she cannot escape, Rhaenyra travels to the dragon pits in an attempt to confront her enemies.

Unfortunately, her mission ends in disaster. Having been tracked down by a group of Aegon’s supporters, Rhaenyra is then attacked by his dragon, Vhagar. The dragon bites and then swallows the queen whole.

In the aftermath, it is determined that Vhagar’s stomach acid did the job of eradicating her from existence, leaving her completely gone with no trace of her to be found.

Ultimately, Rhaenyra’s death is a direct result of her own choices, as well as her opponent’s determination to eliminate her from the line of succession at any cost. As such, she is ultimately eaten by dragons for her own attempted interference in the path of succession.

How did Valyrians tame dragons?

The Valyrians were a powerful civilization living in the western continent of Essos known for their unique culture and their ability to tame dragons. Legends tell of a time when the Valyrians were able to magically tame dragons and enlist them as steeds for their warriors and scouts.

The exact processes used by the Valyrians to subdue and train the dragons are not definitively known, but their methods were complex and deeply rooted in their magic and religion.

It is believed that the Valyrian civilization was able to use their magical powers to forge a connection between themselves and the dragons. This bond is said to have been created through the use of blood magic and powerful rituals involving blood and incantations.

As part of these rituals, they used the blood of leaders to bind the dragon to them, enabling them to control and guide it. It is also thought that they enticed dragons with gemstones and other treasures, as well as used a combination of dragon tongues to communicate their desires.

In addition to the use of magical rituals, the Valyrians are said to have employed a range of techniques to train their dragons. They provided the dragons with food, playing music to soothe them, and even grooming and bathing them.

They also used their own methods such as praise and rewards, as well as punishments, to reinforce desired behaviors in their dragons.

Although the exact methods used by the Valyrians to tame dragons are unknown, the results were very effective. As a result, dragons helped the Valyrians to expand their influence and power across the continent.

What is the connection between Targaryens and dragons?

The Targaryens are a powerful and ancient family from the fictional world of Westeros that have a strong connection to dragons. This connection goes back hundreds of years when the Targaryen family was granted the legendary dragon egg by Aegon the Conqueror, the first ruler of the Seven Kingdoms.

The family legend says the egg was given with the promise that when it hatched, it would symbolically unite the vows made by Aegon and his wife/sister Visenya. Since then, the Targaryens have continued to have intense relationships with their dragons and for many generations, the Targaryens are known for riding and training dragons.

Because of their connection to dragons, the Targaryen rulers are often referred to as Dragonlords. In modern times, the Targaryens who claim the right to rule the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros, such as Daenerys Targaryen, continue to be incredibly close to their dragons and use them as powerful assets in their armies.

Did Drogon know Jon is a Targaryen?

Throughout the final season of Game of Thrones, it was clear that Drogon had some kind of connection to Jon Snow, especially in his reaction to Jon’s death and his burning of the Iron Throne. However, whether or not the dragon had the conscious knowledge that Jon was in fact a Targaryen, is unclear.

Things that show Drogon may have known are how he had no visible reaction when Jon stabbed Daenerys and the tenderness with which he interacted with Jon throughout the show. Drogon also specifically seemed to bond with Jon, he allowed Jon to pet him and Drogon even chose to carry Jon’s body away from the Red Keep and give him a respectful burial beyond the Wall.

On the other hand, there are many moments when Drogon doesn’t seem to trust or have any admiration for Jon. For example, early in season eight Drogon stared menacingly at Jon when Daenerys expressed her concern that people might consider Jon a threat.

He later tried to roast the Unsullied when they refused to follow Daenerys’ orders, but backed off when Jon stepped forward.

In the end, it is only speculation as to whether or not Drogon had the conscious knowledge of Jon’s Targaryen lineage. What is known is that Drogon was certainly aware of Jon on an instinctual level, he demonstrated affection and loyalty towards Jon in his own way, far beyond the attachment of a typical animal to its owner.

Why does Drogon let Jon touch him?

Drogon allowing Jon to touch him is likely a sign of acceptance and loyalty. Jon is the one who finally killed Daenerys and brought an end to her reign. Despite Daenerys and Drogon’s strong bond throughout the show, it appears that Drogon has shifted some of his loyalty to Jon.

Before Jon killed Daenerys, Drogon circled protectively around her and refused to let anyone near her. But afterward, it appears that Drogon has transferred some of his loyalty to Jon.

When Jon approaches Drogon after killing Daenerys, Drogon does not attack Jon and does not show any sign of aggression. Instead, Drogon allows Jon to touch him and even appears to be comforted by Jon’s presence and touch.

This might be a sign that Drogon has accepted Jon and has admired him for taking care of Daenerys and bringing an end to the carnage that she caused. It’s also a sign that Drogon is loyal to Daenerys’ memory, even if he has transferred some of his loyalty to Jon now.

Ultimately, it appears that Drogon has accepted Jon as a worthy successor to Daenerys and has transferred some of his loyalty to Jon in the form of an acceptance.

Are Targaryens descended from dragons?

Yes, Targaryens are believed to be descended from dragons. According to legend, Aegon the Conqueror and his two sister-wives, Rhaenys and Visenya, arrived in Westeros with their dragons, Balerion the Black Dread, Vhagar, and Meraxes.

Aegon and his sisters conquered most of Westeros and established the Targaryen dynasty, which lasted for three centuries.

Throughout their rule, the Targaryens are believed to have bred dragons, making them the only family with dragons in recent times. Stories of their ability to control dragons and mount them in battle are evidenced by several historical records.

Ultimately, the Targaryens may have lost their dragons due to several factors. For example, the Dance of the Dragons (a civil war between two branches of the Targaryen family) brought about the death of many of the remaining dragons.

In addition, the population of Westeros had grown, leading to a decline in resources available to keep the dragons alive.

The recent events at King’s Landing in the HBO series Game of Thrones saw the final decline of the Targaryen family and the last of their dragons. With no living dragons, the Targaryen dynasty is now extinct.

How many dragons did the Targaryens have?

The Targaryens had an impressive number of dragons over the course of their dynasty, with the greatest concentration at their height. At its peak, the Targaryen dynasty had seven dragons, though some of them were still in the egg when the Doom of Valyria destroyed the Valyrian Freehold and the Targaryen bloodline.

The seven dragons were Balerion the Black, Vhagar, Meraxes, Caraxes, Moondancer, Syrax and Tyraxes. Balerion the Black was the largest, most powerful and longest-lived dragon and was ridden by Aegon the Conqueror during the War of Conquest.

Vhagar, Meraxes and Caraxes were ridden by his sisters, Rhaenys and Visenya. After the fall of the Targaryen dynasty, the dragons were presumed to have gone extinct, but in recent times, two dragons have been born in Westeros ; Drogon, Rhaegal and Viserion, the dragons of Daenerys Targaryen.

Why can’t Targaryens burn?

The Targaryens are unique among the Westerosi noble families in that they have a strong connection to dragons, specifically being able to ride and command them. This connection is so strong that members of the family have a unique superpower known as “The Blood of the Dragon” or “The Valyrian Form”.

This ability allows them to have a unique resistance to fire and heat, meaning that when exposed to extreme heat, these Targaryens can survive unscathed and unharmed unlike a regular human. This is why members of the Targaryen family are often called ‘the Unburnt’.

This ability is not just limited to fire, they also have a natural resistance to extremes of cold and even electricity, such as when Aegon the Conqueror (one of the most famous Targaryen kings) was able to survive being hit by a bolt of lightning.

This resistance makes it so that they can not, in fact, be burned by fire.

Can fire hurt Targaryens?

Yes, fire can hurt Targaryens. Though the Targaryens, a noble family in the fictional world of Westeros, are known to have an ancient lineage of “fire and blood,” they are still not immune to the effects of fire.

This is due to the fact that the Targaryen’s signature resistance to fire, known as “fireproof,” is not absolute, and is believed to have weakened over time due to inbreeding.

As such, it is possible for Targaryens to suffer from the effects of fire, including burns and smoke inhalation, depending on the intensity of the fire. While fireproof Targaryens can withstand dragonfire from dragons, their own fire-breathing beasts, other forms of fire such as the red flames of wildfire could cause physical harm to Targaryens, regardless of their fire resistance.

In addition, it should be noted that even if a Targaryen is fireproof and can withstand dragonfire, they could still be rendered unconscious, killed or seriously injured due to secondary effects of the flame, such as intense heat exhaustion or asphyxiation.
