Why did Tilted Kilt go out of business?

Tilted Kilt, a franchise-based sports pub chain that was popular for its Scottish-inspired theme, closed its doors in 2020 after struggling to stay afloat due to the financial implications of the COVID-19 pandemic.

At the start of the pandemic, several restrictions were put in place to try and slow down the spread of the illness, including a ban on indoor dining, capacity restrictions for outdoor dining, and even total closure orders for certain states.

With restaurant sales accounting for the majority of Tilted Kilt’s revenue, the impact of the pandemic was felt almost immediately.

Though they attempted to remain operational with takeout and delivery services, it simply wasn’t enough, and soon the financial struggles began to take a toll. In June 2020, Tilted Kilt announced they would be closing all 28 of their locations, with 16 locations in California shuttering immediately and 12 more locations closing over the course of the following month.

Though the Tilted Kilt brand has gone away, many of its owners have found success in transitioning to a similar model. Some of the former Tilted Kilt locations are now operating as sister businesses, such as a non-chain sports pub or a local restaurant.

What happened to Tilted Kilt in Florida?

Tilted Kilt, a Scottish and Irish themed sports bar and restaurant chain, was founded in the United States in 2003 and had locations primarily in the Southeast, Midwest, and Western regions of the country.

Unfortunately, in 2019, Tilted Kilt announced that it would no longer be open for business in Florida due to poor sales and a lack of return on investments made in the state. This included all of the Florida locations, which included locations in Jacksonville, Altamonte Springs, Orlando, and Tampa.

This was a disappointing setback for Tilted Kilt, as the chain began in Florida and the first location was opened by a Florida resident in the Clearwater area. Despite the closure of the Tilted Kilt locations, fans of the restaurant were still able to enjoy its unique atmosphere and dishes through one of its competitors, Hooters.

While not being the same type of atmosphere, Hooters offers similar dishes in an energetic setting.

The closure of the Tilted Kilt locations in Florida was a significant loss, however, the chain still operates locations in the other regions of the United States, with the closest to Florida being in Georgia, North Carolina, and Alabama.

Additionally, Tilted Kilt has also transferred it’s technology and trademark to the WKN Group, which is a hospitality organization that specializes in restaurant and bar operations. The WKN Group has indicated that they plan to open new locations in areas throughout the United States, which may or may not include Florida.

Until then, Tilted Kilt fans in Florida will just have to contend with visiting the Hooters locations for their appetizing food and exciting sports bar atmosphere.
