How many superpowers are there?

As it depends on how you define a superpower. Generally, it is understood to be a state or nation with a dominant position in international affairs and/or a military and economic might that is particularly formidable in comparison to other nations.

That said, some could argue that any country with a major influence in international affairs could be considered a superpower.

The most commonly accepted definition is that of the United States Department of State which defines a superpower as a “country that has the ability to project its power across large portions of the globe and achieve extensive political, economic and military goals.

” This definition is often used in reference to the two currently acknowledged superpowers, the United States and Russia. It is only these two countries that have demonstrated the capacity to project their influence on such a large scale.

Other countries, such as China, have been described as quasi-superpowers or emerging superpowers, due to their economic and military influence on the global stage. Additionally, some experts have argued that countries such as the United Kingdom, France, Germany and Japan could each be considered a superpower in their own right.

Ultimately, there is much disagreement as to which countries should be seen as superpowers, hence there is no definitive answer to this question.
